【 Gas Engine Generator Sets 】

Gas Engine Generator Sets, also known as Gas generator sets, refer to the power generation device that uses various combustible gas as fuel to drive alternator with the gas internal combustion engine as prime mover to convert mechanical energy into electric energy and thermal energy. They mainly consists of a gas engine, alternator and control system. It is efficient, economical, clean and environment-friendly.

Classification of Gas engine generator sets:

1. According to different gas fuels, the gas generator set can be classified into the following common categories:

■ Natural gas generator sets, the main forms of natural gas transportation include Pipeline natural gas (PNG), Liquefied natural gas (LNG), and Compressed natural gas (CNG).

■ Coal Mine Gas generator sets, suitable for Coal mine gas power generation with methane concentration above 8%.

■ Gaseous biofuel generator sets, including Biomass gasification gas generator sets, Biomass pyrolysis gas generator sets, and biogas generator sets, etc;

■ Coal gas generator sets, suitable for artificial gases such as dry distillation gas, gasification gas, and metallurgical gas.

■ Industrial Off-gas generator sets, suitable for industrial Off-gas such as Oil shale retort gas, Yellow phosphorus tail gas‌, Calcium carbide furnace off-gas, Tyre pyrolysis gas, and the likes of these.


2. According to the installation form, It can be divided into three categories:

■ Stationary Gas Generator Sets, It can be divided into Open-frame Gas generator sets and Enclosed Gas generator sets, wherein the Enclosed Gas generator sets include Containerized Gas generator sets, Silence Gas generator sets, and Rainproof Gas generator sets.

■ Mobile Gas Generator Sets, It can be divided into Vehicle-mounted Gas generator set, Trailer Gas generator set, and Hand-pushed Gas generator set, etc.

■ Marine Gas Generator Sets, suitable for inland river or marine vessels. Mainly used for power supply to ships and offshore platforms. Special requirements such as salt spray resistance, high humidity, and ship vibration must be met. ‌


3. According to the different engine speeds, the Gas engine generator sets can be divided into three categories:

■ High-speed Gas Generator Gets, It refers to a Gas generator set with an internal combustion engine speed n ≥ 1000 r/min. It is a small bore, four stroke generator set. The single set capacity is generally below 2 MW. It has small size, light weight, flexible and fast start stop, and low investment cost. Mainly used as an emergency backup generator set.

■ Medium-speed Gas Generator Gets, It refers to a Gas generator set with an engine speed between 300 ≤ n < 1000 r/min. It is a medium-sized cylinder bore, four stroke generator set. The single set capacity reaches over 20 MW. Medium speed generator sets are widely used in scenarios that require extremely high reliability of power supply, such as peak shaving power stations, remote mining areas, oil fields, outdoor infrastructure projects, disaster rescue sites, data centers, etc.

■ Low-speed Gas Generator Gets, It refers to a Gas generator set with an engine speed n < 300 r/min. It is a large bore, two-stroke generator set. The single set power reaches 30 - 50 MW. It has a long service life, low fuel consumption, large and heavy volume, and high investment cost. Mainly suitable for large independent power plants.


Advantages of medium-speed gas generator sets Compared with high-speed generator sets, the main advantages of medium-speed gas generator sets are:

1. Long service life, low speed can greatly reduce the friction pair of the engine, reduce the wear and failure rate of key components, improve reliability, extend the service life of parts, and the unit life can reach more than 20 years;

2. Low maintenance cost, due to low speed and low wear, the failure rate of components is low, the service time is long, and the maintenance cost of the unit is low;

3. The overhaul cycle is long. The overhaul cycle of medium speed gas generator sets is generally over 60000 hours, while the overhaul cycle of high-speed gas generator sets generally does not exceed 20000 hours;

4. High thermal efficiency, due to low rotational speed, the mixing and combustion time of gas and air in the cylinder is long, and the gas combustion is complete.
